Spiritual Health

Maybe these last few weeks have been lacking clarity for you. Maybe you’ve found it hard to move forward in a relationship, a job situation, entrepreneurship, or with family—maybe it’s time to give your soul what it needs and that is a heavenly perspective and grasp on what you are looking at. So the next time you are conflicted in opinions, remember the fear of the Lord in your situation is a good place to start.

The promise is in Proverbs 7:8: “It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” The Bible says if we lack wisdom we can just ask, and He will give it. As self-sufficient as we think we are, we will always have a limited and skewed view of life because of the natural state of man: sinful, broken. But praise God that there is hope and hope begins is ever present as we choose to forsake ourselves and grab a hold of what Jesus has said about where we are. The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of man (1 Cor. 1:25). Sit on that.

Do not be wise in your own eyes;

Fear the Lord and depart from evil.

It will be health to your flesh,

And strength to your bones.

Proverbs 3:7-8

When was the last time that you just knew you were right? You know, that one situation last week. How about that argument with other employees? There are moments when we think we are right, and in reality we are very wrong.

There are times in our faith journey with Jesus that our own thought processes, ideas, ideals, and plans seem very wise to us. In that mindset, as far as we are concerned our way of thinking simply just makes sense. When we don’t consult God on a thing, or we choose to take our thinking as the only way forward, we cheat ourselves and impede on our soul’s health. Proverbs 3:7 tells us, “Do not be wise in our own eyes. Then it says, fear [have an awe, reverence] the Lord and turn away from evil.” This same Bible tells us that there is a way that seems right to a man and in the end, it ends in destruction (Proverbs 14:12).

Perhaps the Lord through Solomon is helping us see that there is a limited and finite view to life that we have as we look through the sole two lenses of our eyes. It’s no wonder that we are encouraged to have wise counsel in the form of people around us and ultimately instructed to fear the Lord. We need another perspective. Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is where wisdom begins. Wisdom allows us to look at a matter in our hearts, minds, or outside of us with our friends and family. Wisdom helps us to choose we what will edify our entire being, not just provide a solution for a moment. Our decision to fear God and turn from evil isn’t just a one-time thing. I think it should be happening daily in our hearts.
